Reducing the Risk
While there is no cure as yet and no way to prevent dementia, there is still a lot you can do which might reduce your risk of developing dementia. Evidence shows that people who stay active and look after their vascular health are less likely to develop dementia.
If they do get dementia, the onset may be delayed so that they have more years of healthy life:
- In general what's good for your heart is also good for your brain. So keeping active - physically, mentally and socially – is the key
- Eat well and avoid saturated fats
- Monitor your blood pressure and cholesterol
- Keep weight within the healthy limits
- Don’t smoke
- Drink alcohol only in moderation
- Protect your head from injury
- Have regular health checks
