Towards the End of Life
As the illness progresses, you can choose to live in your own home with support or to move to residential care setting.
The key to living well to the end of life is to remain connected with family and the things that give your life meaning, to choose the options that best support you and your family and, to make your wishes known while you are most able to express them.
Attention to comfort care, sensory stimulation and good pain management can maximise quality of life as dementia progresses.
Decisions towards the end of life can be very complex. It is important to consider issues of end of life care and treatment and the advance directives which will help your family members to respect your wishes. These discussions need to consider preferences about where you would like to die – whether at home (in the community or residential care), or in hospital. This end of life decisions can be reviewed through the course of your illness.
